April Sightings at Silvan Safari

Explore more

In the bush, each new month arrives full of possibility. And here at Silvan Safari, April began gently, the air crisp with early signs of autumn, before quickly unfolding into an incredible collection of wildlife encounters. And as always, our guests were at the very centre of these memorable moments.

Lions

The Pride, the Patrol, and a Solitary Serenade

Lions regularly made their presence felt this month. The powerful Nkuhuma pride was often seen crossing Hoffman’s and Shirley’s properties, thrilling us with intimate sightings of their daily routines – from lazy afternoons in the shade to tense, watchful evenings on the move.

Alongside them, the impressive Ndzenga males patrolled confidently around the Mala Mala boundary, their deep calls reverberating through the landscape.

But perhaps most moving was the sighting of the solitary Kruger male lion on Shirley’s property, whose powerful yet plaintive calls carried across the evening air.

Leopards

Whispers and Wonders Among Spotted Shadows

Leopard sightings are always a highlight, and this month was no different as they continued to enchant. Although Makomsava has been elusive since the sad loss of her cubs, we were moved by rare glimpses of her quietly vocalising as she searched for her young.

In brighter scenes, Tiyani was regularly spotted along the tranquil banks of the Manyeleti River, offering remarkable photographic opportunities. Our dominant male leopard, TP, maintained his impressive reign, seen often patrolling his territory with confidence.

In the eastern section, guests enjoyed delightful moments with Kuchava and her cubs, Tlalamba and her young, as well as Lange, showcasing the intimate family dynamics of these beautiful big cats.

Buffalo

Mud Pools and the Charm of Lone Wanderers

Buffalo sightings were fewer this month, though some lucky guests managed to catch glimpses of small herds journeying between Kruger and Nkorho.

At the same time, lone bulls wallowing lazily in mud pools added a touch of character – and a hint of humour – to afternoon game drives.

Elephants

Joyful Gatherings at the Water’s Edge

Elephants, however, were out in full force, much to our guests' delight. Family herds with playful calves were frequently seen splashing and drinking at Big Dam, creating heartwarming scenes of our gentle grey giants enjoying life’s simple pleasures – an infectious joy felt by all who witnessed it.

African Wild Dogs and Hyenas

Swift Pursuits and Playful Mischief

Adding to April’s excitement were rare but exhilarating African wild dog sightings. Though fleeting, our guides and guests felt the thrill of watching these skilled hunters swiftly chase impala through the bush.

The local hyena den also brought its fair share of wonder, with curious cubs playfully engaging our game drive vehicles and becoming the stars of countless special moments.
